As part of a project’s scope, bespoke furniture is an intrinsic component of creating architecture that’s tailored specifically to your routine and habits. Ranging from small bedside cabinetry up to a fully specified kitchen, bespoke pieces can be useful in order to maximise flexibility and adaptability of space through the integration of storage, seating and lighting.

Incorporating bespoke furniture into a project also helps to support local makers and minimises material wastage. We often work closely with joiners and craftspeople who are driven by sustainability to ensure that these pieces are produced to the highest quality.

Our Country Garden House project focuses on the careful remodelling and extension of two adjoined 18th century terraces in Northamptonshire. Internally, the ground floor has been reconfigured to introduce a formal dining room and revitalised kitchen as well as an adjusted principal suite on the first floor. Both keen gardeners, our clients were looking to connect the new dining space out towards the garden and open the South elevation up into the newly landscaped terrace. A number of bespoke pieces of joinery have been key to this project, a highlight being the beautifully designed kitchen by @buhrbespokeinteriors .

A primary material used throughout the Contemporary Farmhouse project is the D-76 brick by Petersen Tegl, which forms the prominent chimneys, frames elevations and defines a key datum around the farmhouse for the separated ‘outbuildings’. The subtle colour changes and non-uniformity within the bricks, due to their specific method of manufacture, leads to a warm collage of tones across the building’s facades, appearing more akin to a reclaimed brick. Internally, the bricks have been used for the two walls bookending the full height entrance hall space. We tested out using a wash and a paint but eventually decided to leave this exposed to highlight the brick’s inherent aesthetic qualities.

Wishing all of our clients and collaborators a Happy New Year! To kick things off, here’s a few drawings from the Contemporary Farmhouse project that highlight the bespoke layout of the building. Although appearing as a collection of individually detailed agricultural ‘outbuildings’, each one is connected internally, creating a house that is able to expand and contract responding to the needs of the family. Different portions of the building can be locked off to give additional privacy and space.

Another series of angles that highlight the detailing on the flower room at our Modern Farmhouse project. Despite being connected internally to the rest of the house, the flower room has been made distinctive through scale and refined timber detailing. The brick datum that runs around the base ties back to the main house and its positioning gives uninterrupted views out to the greenhouse and landscape beyond.

A couple of drawings from our recent Country Garden House project. The ground floor plan was carefully reconfigured to show an expanded kitchen and new dining space, enclosed by glass and Northamptonshire stone. The materials and details of the new extension create a gentle transition between the garden and the existing building fabric, drawing nature into the interior and bringing additional light into the spaces.
